Mercedes-Benz 230 SL “Pagode”

PRICE UPON REQUEST

“The word alone incites wanderlust: “Pagoda” alludes to the Far East, with an exotic Asian note and warmer climes. Many were left longing for the sun in central Europe in the seemingly never-ending 1962/63 “winter of the century”. When the Mercedes-Benz 230 SL was presented at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 1963, it caused a sensation within the industry. Known internally as W 113, the two-seater roadster unites a decadent delivery of power with an engaging elegance and is distinguished by outstanding comfort, excellent driving performance and exemplary driving safety. The 230 SL is the first sports car worldwide with a safety body consisting of a rigid passenger cell and front and rear crumple zones.” (*)

This particular 1965 Mercedes_Benz 230 SL model is equipped with lots of chrome elements which was typical for the early ‘Pagode’ 1963-1967 series. Both the outside as the interior chrome parts such as the chromed dashboard are in perfect condition!

This ‘Pagoda’ was purchased in 1965 by gas station owner Herr Janssen in Aachen, Germany. (Original ‘Fahrzeugbrief‘ provided) The car remained in his possession until 1975 and was then sold to car-dealer Mathias Moll, who sold it two months later again to Walter Ulrich Solingen. He owned the vehicle until 1990.

During that year, the car was introduced in Belgium by garage owner Johny Withofs. He bought it for private use and provided the car with a 280 engine with 170hp instead of the original 150hp. As a garage owner he had the knowledge and techniques to perform the engine change and he chose the more powerful engine with better performance.

The most recent owner was driving past the ‘Pagode’ for years where it was just standing in the showroom. Asking for if the car was for sale, Withofs answered that it was not and that he was not driving the car either. He replied furthermore that he wanted to use the car, along with his wife, when he would stop working.

In 2013 Johnny became terminally ill and decided to still sell the ‘Pagoda’ to the still interested client. After not being used for nearly 23 years, some maintenance needed to be done and was carried out by the last owner. In addition to technical repair, he decided to give the car a complete new spray job and provided also a new soft top (also the hardtop is included). This all has been carried out recently in 2016.

This is the story of a very beautiful car that is now presented in our showroom. Please give us a call if you have questions or want to see.
